About the Artist

Cathy Hilder is a visual artist based in the tropical north of Australia, where the vibrant ecosystems, shifting light and dramatic landscape of the Top End continue to shape and inspire her creative practice. Surrounded by lush vegetation, coastal environments, and diverse wildlife, Cathy creates work that explore the intricate relationship between nature, movement, memory, and human connection to place.

Cathy’s artistic foundations were developed through tertiary studies in Visual Arts and further refined through the Milan Art Institute Mastery Program. Her creative approach reflects a deep curiosity and willingness to move fluidly between mediums, balancing detailed observation with experimentation, spontaneity, and intuitive mark-making.

Alongside her studio practice, Cathy facilitates creative workshops and social painting experiences through Paint & Create Darwin, where she encourages others to reconnect with their creativity in a relaxed and supportive environment. She is passionate about helping people experience the mindful and restorative qualities of art-making, regardless of skill level.

Artist styles and mediums - How I work.

Working primarily in oils alongside mixed media, watercolour, ink, and photography, Cathy’s paintings combine realism with expressive abstraction. Her work is recognised for its layered surfaces, luminous colour palettes, and immersive compositions that invite viewers to slow down and experience the beauty, complexity, and fragility within the natural world. Drawing inspiration from tropical flora, underwater environments, birds, and organic forms, her paintings often magnify details that may otherwise go unnoticed, creating a sense of intimacy, wonder, and emotional resonance.

Travel, storytelling, photography, and the performing arts have also played an important role in shaping Cathy’s creative voice. Her love of belly dancing, with its flowing movement, rhythm, colour, and expressive energy, subtly influences the sense of motion and vitality present throughout her work.
